Transformers, Avatars in Disguise

Category: RL Meets SL, Transformers by Stone Culdesac

I just took my kids to see the Transformers last night, it is a REALLY good movie btw, definitely worth seeing, especially if you have kids, although, there are some cuss words throughout the movie, so, you’ve been warned. Anyway, Second Life Insider just posted a quick review of what they thought of the official Transformers site in SL, and while he definitely liked the detail of the FREE avatars they created, he says they fall short because they don’t transform, and it is certainly possible to do so, because there are already some avatars that do just that, transform.

For those who grew up loving the transformers, the charm of these legendary characters is their awesome ability to change appearances between robots and ordinary cars/vehicles/mechanical things. In fact, I’d dare say that the essence of transformers is that they … transform! And this is where Liam’s avatars fall short. Although the avatar builds themselves display a high degree of detail and depth in robot mode, they only have robot mode. And this type of content is symptomatic with real-world ventures into Second Life – content that is made by a marketing agency rather than a human with a soul. I haven’t seen the site myself yet, I will be checking it out later on, I need Optimus Prime and Megatron avatars, if they have them, so, check back and I’ll give me quick little review of it as well. One of the developers stopped in a made a comment on that post, saying, “It seems to me that Amalthea, like so many SL commentators, is quick to forget that marketers are often also fans. This project has allowed us to go on enjoying the toys we loved when we were kids (albeit that we’re fortunate enough to be doing it for living).” Many people are way to quick to judge and run down things, I know, I have done it myself, check the Transformers SL site yourself, here is the Second Life URL.
