SL Relay for Life: Second Life success! The Guardian Gamesblog’s magnificent team of many dedicated members ran tall and proud in all manner of avatars this weekend as part of the third Second Life Relay for Life. I don’t think I can thank Clarence Kamachi, JoannaTrail Blazer, Helter Alexandre and Stigsson Lundquist enough for their support and time and for the hours they spent running around the track during the 18 hour race! In total, we raised L$101,435 - that’s US $485 - for the American Cancer Society, ran 10 laps on a track that took a full hour to run without stopping (it took me 4 hours to run my first lap and I didn’t get to see half of what I wanted to!) and clocked over 120,000 virtual meters. Pictures here and here. Our efforts, in conjunction with those of the other teams, helped to raise over US $115,000 in total - 1.5 times 2006’s record. WOW.

Ambitious New Second Life Maps Mashup They are creating maps for Second Life using Google Maps and layering them with land info, land sales, etc. Looks pretty cool.

7 Ways Croquet is Better than Second Life No, it’s not talking about the stick and ball game croquet, they are talking about this, “Croquet is a powerful open source software development environment for the creation and large-scale distributed deployment of multi-user virtual 3D applications and metaverses that are (1) persistent (2) deeply collaborative, (3) interconnected and (4) interoperable. The Croquet architecture supports synchronous communication, collaboration, resource sharing and computation among large numbers of users on multiple platforms and multiple devices.” The blog post it is Second Life, but much more.

WIRED AND THE LONG TAIL OF SECOND LIFE MARKETING Last Friday I contacted Wired Magazine editor-in-chief Chris Anderson about my critique of Frank Rose’s article on failed marketing in Second Life, to get his perspective. Chris told me he agreed with the article, and Rose’s subsequent defense of it. Fair enough, though I still maintain the piece doesn’t begin to offer a full and nuanced consideration of the subject.

The New World Notes site mentioned in the previous paragraph, created by James Wagner Au, has a reader survey going in which they are collecting your votes on why the Lindens stopped gambling right now. Me, I think it has a lot to do with the shady splodders and avatars being milked for their money, but what do I know. Check it out READER SURVEY: WHY DID THE LINDENS END GAMBLING IN SECOND LIFE NOW?
