Second Life Q&A on the Accelerating Universe Following the talk I gave in Second Life about the discovery of the accelerating Universe, we held a couple of Q&A sessions. The original plan was to have questions right after the talk, but the Second Life main grid crashed right at that moment. We all got online about half an hour later, and I held one Q&A session for the people who came back. There was another one the next day.
The Second Life Economy: What Is There, What Was Missed This is what I would call a disclaimer. I could easily argue that ‘banks’ in Second Life are also a place more convenient than my mattress to store cash; I can offer that banks in Second Life also attract real world capital through Linden dollars by offering to pay an interest rate. The technology of the Linden Lab databases for storing accounts is a neutral playing ground for Second Life banks, but what Zee alluded to with the comment on loans is that banks provide services and dress themselves up as investments.
In the News: Second Life Housing What if I told you there was a way to build your dream house in a prime location for under $1,000? Well, it’s true–virtually. The New York Times reports that Second Life, a virtual world introduced into the material universe by San Francisco-based Linden Lab in 2003, is in the middle of a housing boom. Paralleling life in the real world, many Second Life residents have tired of the wild life and are looking for a little permanence for their electronic identities. As a result, many are building dream homes and laying roots in virtual communities, complete with chatty neighbors and strict zoning laws.
Second Life Ages - To 1997 From 1993 - In One Week Last week I reported IBM’s view of virtual worlds, Second Life Works When You Pretend It’s 1993 - which says essentially that Second Life today is like the Web was in 1993 or maybe 1995. Now this week Nick Wilson is upping the ante a couple of years, giving us 7 Reasons Why Virtual Worlds Are Like the Web Circa 1997. Those two years make all the difference, as anybody who remembers 1997 can attest.
