Education in Second Life
Lots of people talking about education within Second Life, here are a few of the articles to get you going.
EL4A Had a meeting with some of the team from EL4A (E-learning For Africa) recently, where we discussed working in partnership with team on their project. An opportunity we look forward to as a team here at Bromley.
Currently EL4A are developing a African centre that will host all African educational, health and development institutions. If all goes according to plan, then this will lead hopefully to a complete Africa Island in Second Life, sounds impressive.
Uganda: A Second Life for People With Disabilities FLAVIA Nantalo is deaf. Because of her handicap, she had found it hard to enroll for computer studies in the same institution with able people.
Through the National Union of Women with Disabilities of Uganda (Nuwodu), Nantalo, with nine others with disabilities, enrolled for a three-month course at Second Life Uganda Limited, a computer training centre in Lugogo.
Class explores business in virtual world of ‘Second Life’ A new course at Cornell University’s business school will give graduate students the chance to learn about the financial “wild west” of virtual communities.
Robert Bloomfield’s Business and Oversight in Second Life course will introduce students to the complex issues surrounding business interactions taking place in virtual worlds.
Creativity in Second Life: Educator’s Panel The final panel session for the NMC’s Symposium on Creativity in Second Life was wonderful! Chaired by Alan Levine (CDB Barkley), it involved a diverse range of educators involved in Second Life, reflecting about the week’s sessions and creativity in SL in general. Educators included:

Only if you have been there like a student you will consider some aspects not only to improve user engagement if not to enrich the experience and to design the learning activity and, one of the most important things, to research new ways for learning.
Podcast: Using Second Life for Immersive Learning In this 14 minute podcast, we feature an interview with Cynthia Calongne, Professor of Computer Science at Colorado Technical University. She presented two sessions at the 2007 Seminars On Academic Computing Conference entitled, “Beyond Course Management Systems: Second Life” and “Using Second Life”.
Second Life lets students and instructors meet and collaborate to work on projects and exchange information. The immersive environment is helpful for many teaching concepts and collaborative learning. In this discussion we find out how Second Life is being used in higher education as well as with K-12 students.
