Virtual journal clubs, second life and all that jazz There has been a lot of science activity on Second Life lately, courtesy Jean-Claude Bradley and Nature. This led to a post about the potential of Second Life in education and science on my Kyte.tv channel last night. Turns out that Attila has been thinking along the same lines, although not necessarily about Second Life specifically, but more general to the web.
Anarchy on-line A recent report by Pew Research’s Internet & American Life Project found that 32 percent of all teenagers who use the internet have experienced some form of ‘cyber-bullying’. And it is not limited to adolescents, where you would expect it.
Griefing, which is often used to describe behavior on multi-player online games in which individual players intentionally frustrate others by disregarding the rules of etiquette has become so widespread that it has even generated sub genres — terms such as kill stealing, corpse camping, spamming and ninja looting.
Consumed with Grief(ing) The thing is, despite griefing, the Internet is all of that. I have personal experience with friends who have met partners and more online in just this fashion. Ultimately, what makes a griefer is summed up best in this Penny Arcade comic (adult language to follow). Anonymity + an audience = antisocial behavior. There’s more to it than that, however, as many, perhaps even the majority of those online are not griefers at all. One must be of the mentality that causing harm to others is pleasurable.

Virtual Recruiting for Real-World Jobs August 22, 2007 · There’s an unusual job fair taking place this week, but you can’t get there by plane or car or drop off your resume in person. You have to travel in cyberspace — to a virtual world called Second Life, the online community where people — or their avatars — hang out for enjoyment, and increasingly, work and business.

IBM faces Second Life strike Ever wanted to go on strike, be part of that feeling of solidarity on the picket line, but felt too cowardly to take the risk? September should see just the opportunity for you.
That is when Rappresentanza Sindacale Unitaria IBM Vimercate (RSU), the official trade union representing IBM’s 9,000 workers in Italy, is planning a most novel form of industrial action – a strike on Second Life – and it wants as many avatars as possible manning the picket lines.
What Web2.0 Can Teach Companies in Virtual Worlds One of the things that Second Life affords companies, is the ability to rapidly change track when the present course no longer makes sense. To make adjustments on the fly, even complete changes in business model (read, virtual world strategy..) is very web2.0, and Second Life, above all, allows for seriously rapid prototyping of ideas and builds through it’s object and scripting tools — at a level you wouldn’t normally associate with large companies. In fact, only this week, Christian Renaud over at Cisco was (justifiably) cursing the hoops the corporate machine was making him jump through to get some stuff done. It’s interesting to note, that in the virtual world, where he has domain, this is not the case, and more interesting yet to read about how the company has rapidly evolved its Second Life strategy based on first hand experience.
