Philip’s “Missing Image” T-Shirt (and Linden Lab’s culture of openness) Ever since I saw Philip Rosedale wearing that “Missing Image” t-shirt at SLCC, I’ve been thinking about his comments in the keynote and his personal commitment to the Second Life community to get things right. He talked at length about the quality and uptime metrics posted throughout HQ that informs staffers how things are going at any given time. It was clear to me that he has his customers’ needs first in mind at all times and is building a culture of accountability at Linden Lab that other organizations could learn a lot from.
SL and the Art World: Soho + Second Life = Sexy! Second Life Art is beginning to enter the mainstream of the art world. Visionary artist and art theorist Richard Minsky (his avatar in Second Life is appropriately called ArtWorld Market) and Second Life’s rising art world star Jeffrey Lipsky - known as Filthy Fluno in Second Life - are playing key roles in bridging the two worlds.
Second Life and science - Things are getting rather interesting I must admit that while I have always seen the promise of Second Life, the incessant need to portray it as a marketing machine and the whole sex/gambling thing have kept me away - Until now!!! As Jean-Claude illustrates in a post about ChemBioFoo, and the weekly Scifoo lives on sessions, it is clear that, especially with improved performance, Second Life is a viable medium for virtual poster sessions and conferences. If we can someone either add personal voice chat capabilities, or link Second Life to Skype, there is a lot of potential that I am excited to keep an eye out on. I am hardly the aficionado that Jean-Claude or Berci are, but am looking forward to keeping a small scientific presence on Second Life. And here’s a teaser for tomorrow’s Monday’s session on science and video.
9/11 Gets a Fitting Memorial in Second Life There have been several examples of the twin towers being rebuilt in the virtual world of Second Life, but with the anniversary of that awful day with us once again, I would like to bring to your attention a site that I feel deserves a special mention: the World Trade Center sim. As I write this, it is still being finalized, ready for an official opening to coincide with the time the first plane hit. What singles this site out is that it does not attempt to undo what has happened. Rather, it commemorates those from many. many nations who died in that dreadful and tragic atrocity.
When virtual celebrity mimics real life When I rejoined Second Life in December of 2005, I had no idea that I would be known for anything. Pretty soon I was making lots of friends and having the time of life. So much so, that after spending $185 USD in a single month on virtual shopping, it was time to get a job in SL. I asked around and ended up promoting Machinima.
Even in a Virtual World, ‘Stuff’ Matters IT’S payday for Janine Hawkins. Not in the real world, where she is a student at Nipissing University in Ontario, but in the online world of Second Life, where she is managing editor of the fashion magazine Second Style.
Think Marketing on Second Life Sounds Promising? You Might Already Be Doing It. It’s hard to open up a newspaper or a business magazine without stumbling upon an article about Second Life, the Linden Labs virtual world which has a thriving virtual economy, a real estate market, a crime rate, and a host of other pleasures and pains you’d think were only available in the real world.
