How local companies are doing business in Second Life When Greg Verdino of Melville gets up to go to work, he no longer makes a dash for the Long Island Rail Road to commute to Manhattan. No, as chief strategy officer of a new marketing company called crayon, on many days he sits down at his home computer and logs into a 3-D virtual world called Second Life.
Politicians Active in Second Life To reach the people where they live, presidential candidates are reaching voters in the brave new world of Second Life, to virtually shake hands with a generation weaned on computers.
Oasis DVD, Lord Don’t Slow Me Down, Previews in Second Life UK rock band Oasis is opening its official online space in the virtual world Second Life (SL) this Monday, September 24, and is kicking off with a preview of its latest release, a feature-length-plus, limited edition double DVD entitled ‘Lord Don’t Slow Me Down’. The facility – built for Oasis in Second Life’s ‘New Horizon’ business park – is a joint venture between SL developer New Business Horizons (NBH – http://www.nbhorizons.com ) and SL media producer Phoenix Film & Television (http://www.phoenixmedia.co.uk ).
First day chaos OK - Thursday we gave the kids their accounts, assigned a few minor “housekeeping ” tasks for them and - what else but the grid was down for updates! I heard one frustrated student exclaim “Well, I hate Second Life already!” I explained the nature of the grid to them, the frequent updates, and the reasons for them. We watched some very cool machinima - and they left.
Virtual History Before I was introduced to Second Life by KJ, I had a dream of creating virtual history simulations for my students -games really, in which they could experience walking the streets of ancient Athens or Rome. And while I would still like to see that realized in a way that will be accessible to my sixth graders, it looks like someone else has created just that -and in spectacular fashion.
