Second Life News for September 25, 2007

September 25th, 2007 | Category: Second Life News

Reincarnationist Heads for Second Life Imagine the book tour of the future. Travel has gotten to be expensive and difficult. Security at airports makes flying unpleasant and cutbacks at airlines make food even worse than that. Here in the future, even if an author did want to tour, hardly anyone would show up. Between their jobs, their families and their social networks, no one has time to actually attend author events in person.

Artificial General Intelligence in Second Life Virtual worlds are the golden path to achieving Artificial General Intelligence and positive Singularity, Dr Ben Goertzel’s, CEO of Novamente LLC and author of “The Hidden Pattern: A Patternist Philosophy of Mind” explained in his presentation “Artificial General Intelligence in Virtual Worlds” given at the Singularity Summit 2007 earlier this month. According to Goertzel, Singularity is no longer a far future idea. About a year ago Goertzel gave a talk “Ten Years to a Positive Singularity — If We Really, Really Try.”

User testing in Second Life There were some really interesting presentations, and while I didn’t get to all of them, without doubt the most interesting for me was User Research in Virtual Worlds, a presentation I highlighted earlier as being one I wanted to see.

Gary Bunker and Gabriele Hermansson, both from Hyro, spoke for close to an hour about their experiences in setting up and running an experimental focus group within Second Life.

Companies to Watch I think they missed one that’s worthy of including, though: SceneCaster. Mashable has a write-up of SceneCaster. I’ll have a video of them up soon.

Why? SceneCaster is aimed at Second Life. But it gets rid of some of the real negatives that Second Life has. What are those negatives?

Second Life Grid Architecture Meet up Transcript. So here is the transcript of the session yesterday, I hope everybody is ok with that, if not, please tell me and I will remove your parts. You can find the slides in this flickr set.

Christmas adverts venture into virtual world A Christmas advertising campaign for the churches will take its publicity into the virtual world this month – inviting people to have a second go at life.

The new adverts, which follow a theme of second chances, will invite people to visit an ‘island’ accessible through the online virtual world www.secondlife.com where Christmas events will take place and spiritual questions will be discussed.

Google eyeing its own ‘Second Life?’ For some time now, we here at CNET News.com have been hearing whispers that Google might be looking to get into the virtual world space, particularly in light of the increasing interest of existing environments like Second Life, and the success of Google Earth and the search giant’s purchase of the Sketchup technology.

Day Trip To Ponderama

September 25th, 2007 | Category: Aribella Lafleur, Places to Visit, Sims Worth Exploring

Here is another walkabout from Aribella Lafleur.

Day Trip To Ponderama

We have undertaken the long and arduous annual pilgrimage to see Burning Life. To my dismay, the Sherpas began to buckle under the insignificant weight of my essentials and required almost daily rest stops. A lucky pick for just such a break, Ponderama proved to be a small oasis of fun in the entertainment desert.

Bouncy Castle

The lure of a bouncy castle was too much for the likes of me to resist…. True to form, I dressed in my Sunday best and dragged my loyal (and multiplying) Sherpa crew to visit the Ponderama Flea Market.

Bouncy Castle 2

To no avail, I tried my hardest to deflate the bright, buoyant monstrosity with heels that could punch a hole through the skull of a charging bull. I did, however, manage to bounce over the top of the castle and land face-first on the sidewalk…..

Luggage Slide

After choosing not to file a lawsuit, I jumped back into the springy paradise and elbowed my companions as we jostled each other for space. Growing tired of bruising ourselves, we wandered around looking at the car-boot sale. A sign for a giant slide caught my attention and soon I was dragging my luggage-toting Sherpas to join me in an extremely genteel-looking glide (or ten) down the slope to land in a heap at the bottom.

Skin Tutorial

September 24th, 2007 | Category: Appearance, Avatar, Skin

Here is another great post from Natalia Zelmanov, Miss Second Life 2007 and hair creator extraordinaire, this one is a skin tutorial, and she’s not just creating any old skin either, she’s doing a Goth style skin, one that looks like Emily from the Corpse Bride.

Have you seen my husband… Victor?

Heehee…my all time favorite movie is the Corpse Bride. So what better way to start the series on Avatar Skins than to make Emily, the Corpse Bride :)
I get requests for a skin tutorial almost every week. I’ve been avoiding it, cause its really not something I’m good at. But Ill give it a try here just for fun :)
In this Part 1 of the Avatar Skin series, we will work on a Goth-type skin (specifically, the Corpse Bride :D). My goal is to describe all the general steps involved in creating an Avatar Skin. We will create a base set of skin textures and apply it to our avatar. Source: Day 363: Creating Goth Avatar Skin Part 1

Definitely a site worth checking out, lots of great info there.
