Second Life Documentary seeks input I had some contact today from Shelley Matulick, who made the documentary ‘Our Brilliant Second Life’ that screened on SBS earlier this year. There are some further films on the way, so Shelley has made the following request:
“I am looking for someone engaged in slave/master arrangement or who is a hostess in SL for a documentary for SBS. Must be willing to reveal real life identity. Contact me at phantombutterfly@hotmail.com”.
Death Tube fun You all know the crazy stunts of Jackass. From riding shopping carts down a hill to slamming nails through fingers and whatnot. Well, you can do stupid stunts in Second Life as well. How about a Tube of Death? Rolling down a hill in a tube?
Have a Job Interview in Second Life? Choose Your Avatar Carefully If you have a job interview in Second Life, you need to choose your avatar carefully! Your avatar can impact whether or not you get that job. In a recent press release, professor Dr. Darren Nicholson says that avatars can give potential employers clues about job candidates. Potential employers should use these clues when screening job candidates.
Second Life branding A topic close to Design, is Branding. Of course you can design and build things, but how to sell it? Or .. if you have a RL company selling objects or services, how do you sell those online? Second Life is, like many other platforms, a great way to reach out to your clients and affiliates. And not only that, you can also use it as a medium to sell your things.
‘Second Life’ Finally Gets Updated Physics One of my consistent complaints about Second Life over the last couple of years has been that the virtual world hasn’t aged well. Powered by the now-ancient “Havok 1″ physics engine since at least 2003, Second Life will at long last be updated to the more current Havok 4 engine, improving the performance, features and capabilities of the virtual world. This is welcome news for veteran Second Life residents like myself, who have been patiently enduring the hand-waving and vague promises of Linden Lab for ages–Havoc 2 was supposed to be rolled out by the end of 2004. That’s like an eternity for techies.

Reality EduTV and Open Second Life This weekend I saw the future. Not that it’s the long term future by any stretch since things seem to be moving at warp speed anyway. But there were a couple of technologies on display at the “New Media Literacy’s in Learning Landscapes Conference” in Charlottetown, PEI that had me feeling like that giddy little geek that sometimes pops up when everything around me is feeling new again.
Op/Ed: Moving Beyond Shouting Matches Prior to malpractice insurance being required for physicians, some doctors would protect themselves by having all of their assets in their spouse’s name. If a patient ever sued the doctor for malpractice, the patient could win, but there would be no money to compensate the patient. In this way, the physician was said to be judgment proof. Preventing defendants from seizing your assets was an important way for people to protect themselves from lawsuits. Judgment proof can be expanded to cover the many ways that prevent a real life suit from being pursued against a Second Life resident.
Did Naked People Accost Newt Gingrich in Second Life? A funny thing happened when Newt Gingrich visited Second Life. According to at least one newspaper, the first thing he saw was “a lovely young digital lady” — who was completely naked!
“This is the new technology of the 21st century,” Gingrich told the audience later — though he was referring to online political forums. But the truth turned out to be much more complicated…
Second Life: Virtual reality surges to new level on Internet There are seasoned Internet gamers today who weren’t even born when David Warner, Bruce Boxleitner and Jeff Bridges raced neon light cycles across the grid in the virtual world of “Tron,” the 1982 Disney film about real people drawn into the world of computer simulations.
But as primitive as those early computer graphics were, I still don’t dare drive my red “Avispa” scooter that fast among the houses of Kookaburra Haven, my neighborhood in Second Life.
Virtual Strikers from 30 Countries Picket IBM Sites in Second Life A virtual strike against IBM drew picketers from approximately 30 countries to Big Blue sites in Second Life on Thursday.
The Gate - merging Second Life with Real Life Merging the real world, our world, with Virtual Worlds is a dream for some, a reality for others. The Gate (or Hole in Space, Reloaded) is a project that will happen in Brussels next week.
Second Life Beta Testing Havok4 Last Friday Linden Lab set up the Havok4 physics engine for testing on the Second Life Beta Grid. Second Life has been using Havok1 (released in 2000) since its inception and planning for an upgrade to Havok2 for what seems like almost as long. Havok, which was recently acquired by Intel, released version 5.0 earlier this month.
