Economics 2.0? A business primer on virtual worlds In August 2007, the digital world experienced a first: a genuine run on a bank located on the “virtual world” Second Life. As depositors rushed to withdraw their funds from the shadowy Ginko Financial, their predicament drew much attention. But far from identifying it as a calamity, to many commentators it confirmed the faithfulness of the computer simulation: after all, the real world had long experienced insolvencies, too.

A Full Day Of Technical Troubles In Second Life Yesterday’s rolling restart of Second Life knocked everyone off the grid for awhile. In the ensuing chaos we were still able to pull off our Metanomics event, but all was not well. A major function (that luckily we didn’t happen to be using) had just been crippled.

The technical sticking point lies in a function called llSetLinkPrimitiveParameters() which, when used right, can move an avatar into an appropriate position.

Art Installation in Second Life Wows Educators On Monday, Mr. Spensley, known in Second Life as the avatar DanCoyote Antonelli, led a group of educators on a tour of his stunning art installations in Second Life that feature brightly colored sculptures that become more vivid and lively as one approaches them, an experience Mr. Spensley calls “stealth architecture.”

Lauks Nest in Second Life Recently this post in Second Arts prompted me to once again pay a visit to Lauks Nest. In the last week Linden Labs has announced that EU customers have to pay VAT. This means many art projects are under threat as they are no longer financially viable. Second Life URL.

Interview with Smoke Wijaya - Anti-FNSL Activitst Living in second life and a so called “God sim” means a lot of the players are free to go and do as they please. However this is not without consequences, as political ideas and agendas spread and clash. Recently I met with a man who calls himself Smoke Wijaya - the owner of the anti-FNSL parcel in Pahto sim. Smoke Wijaya is a communist and anti-FNSL leader. For those who have not been paying close attention, the anti-FNSL strives to purge fascism and racism from Second Life, and their base, located on what is described as a “fascist sim” is decorated with giant fists, spotlights and tributes to Malcolm x.

3D Periodic Table in Second Life Further adding to the set of chemistry tools in Second Life, Hiro Sheridan has created a 3D periodic table with rotating atoms. Although not directly proportional, the relative sizes of the spheres are in the correct order. Clicking on them provides basic information about the corresponding element.

Shock: Second Life is all hype says study Nicholas Deleon gets owned in the comments when he says the Yankee study confirms his complaints about Second Life growth stagnating and residents only logging in for 12 minutes a month. It’s a quick entertaining read that just shows some people shouldn’t talk about stuff they don’t know anything about.
