Resolution of Lawsuit Linden Research, Inc., Philip Rosedale, and Marc Bragg have agreed to settle the “Bragg v. Linden and Rosedale” lawsuit currently pending in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The parties agree that there were unfortunate disagreements and miscommunications regarding the conduct and behavior by both sides and are pleased to report that Mr. Bragg’s “Marc Woebegone” account, privileges and responsibilities to the Second Life community have been restored. For the benefit of the Second Life community, the Parties have mutually agreed that the terms of their resolution shall remain confidential. The Parties ask that this confidentiality be respected.

Fictional Characters Get Virtual Lives, Too The lead detective on the hit CBS series “CSI: NY,” Mac Taylor, is a pretty conventional television hero: like his colleagues on the two other “CSI” franchises, he uses science to follow the evidence and catch the bad guys.

Phone Calls From Second Life This past week saw two brands of telephony providers announcing services to provide phonecalls from the virtual world of Second Life. The technology is, in fact, an interface to a call handling service that would connect two existing phones in the real world through a long-distance service provider. I contacted them both for details.

Movable Life “Shrinks” Second Life for Browser Use 3Di, a company based in Japan, offers a browser-based alternative to experiencing Second Life, called Movable Life. It does run the official Second Life client, and gives you the option of enjoying your Second Life account without the 3D imaging.

NMC Publishes Results of Educators in Second Life Survey The New Media Consortium (NMC) is pleased to share the results of a Spring 2007 survey we conducted of educators who are participating in the virtual world of Second Life.

Sent out to members of the NMC, our in-world educational community, and the Second Life Educators Listserv (SLED) in May 2007, the survey represents the interests, activities, and demographics of more than 200 educators.

Kucinich seeks presidency on Second Life After taking his presidential campaign as far afield as Syria and Lebanon, Cleveland Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich is venturing into an alternate universe for votes: Second Life, an online 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its 9.8 million users from around the globe.

A trippy video his campaign posted on YouTube shows off the campaign’s virtual HQ, and tells viewers they can “teleport” themselves there by going to the site and searching for “Kucinich for President 2008.”

Learning About Second Life I’m very much hooked on Second Life at the moment. That means I’ve subscribed to a number of Second Life and virtual reality related blogs, and have been watching some videos on YouTube to find some places I haven’t visited yet.

Google Life Google may be diving into the virtual worlds scene later this year.

Another virtual world is loitering on the horizon, but the Google bods who may be building it are keeping hush hush about their plans for a (reported) avatar-based, Google Earth mashup. The blogosphere is buzzing with false sightings and rumoured projections. But “My World,” as it’s been dubbed, may be closer than we think.

Second Life Hype Outweighs Impact on Mainstream Interactive Activity The media hype surrounding Second Life doesn’t match reality, and metaverses such as Second Life are experiencing slowing growth and limited impact because of the “tethered” nature of the virtual-world experience, according to the Yankee Group, writes MarketingCharts (via Boston Globe).

The future of Second Life Second Life developer, Linden Lab, is hard at work enhancing the voice capabilities, search features and navigation interface of its creation.

The company is convinced that this three-and-a-half-year-old virtual world is not a flash in the pan but rather a credible vehicle for social interactions, commerce and entertainment.
