Second Life, Pac Man, and Computer Chess Recently, I was asked my professional opinion about Second Life, and this is one answer.
When I give periodic talks about Google, I demo Google Gadgets and show the variety of them, including ones that are games such as Space Invaders or Pac Man. Usually I make a joke about how great this is, because now I don’t have to be bored at work anymore, that I’m ranked in the top 100 of Space Invaders, but with another slow semester I’ll probably make the top 10.

NMC’s Orientation Island Honors The Home of Linden Lab After collecting a long list of suggestions from our communities for what to include in an Orientation Island experience, we are ready to have some early birds test out NMC Orientation, our new entry in Second Life designed specifically for students and educators. Our use of the Second Life Registration API allows us to have our own web site for creating new accounts and when these new users first log in to Second Life, they will find themselves at the NMC Orientation Island, rather than the public one most of us experienced (and hopefully survived).

Government’s second-crack Summit to employ Second Life Online forums, or even a Second Life presence, will be among ways of engaging in the debate at the Digital Future Summit 2.0 next month.
The organizers of the summit are, however, looking to avoid a technology-focused discussion in favor of a “national conversation” on how ICT can be directed to the benefit of the economy and life of the country, says digital strategy programme manager Janet Mazenier.
Getting a Second Life Australians are early adopters of technology. Think of the rapid rate of take up of ATMs, mobile phones and flat screen TVs. So, it is hardly surprising that Australian companies are beginning to enter the brave new world of Second Life.

Ways to Avoid Electronic Contract Killers in Second Life The creators of Second Life — an online virtual community — faced some real-life problems in a Pennsylvania court recently. In Bragg v. Linden Research, Inc., No. CIV.A06 4925 (E.D.P.A. May 30, 2007), Judge Eduardo C. Robreno, denying a motion to compel arbitration, offers attorneys and their clients some useful guidelines to consider when drafting standard electronic form contracts.
Life after a doctorate I am being forced to contemplate a future other than that which I usually imagine, in which I bumble along in the college I’m currently in, write a book people are vaguely nice about, and become a fondly regarded elderly eccentric who inspires a passion for political theory in students, despite having crumbs in his beard. Except it’s the future, so it’ll be nanobots in my beard. And the college may be in Second Life. But you get the picture.
