Second Life News for November 1, 2007
Identity Hunting In Second Life Lingerie is easy - but where do you find anthro-style purple cat ears? Like so many people, I come to SL to be myself, but more myself than my RL body will allow. Problem with that is for me that requires more than just a nice skin and cool clothing. I’m a little bit of a lot of things, and it required a lot of hunting, a lot of mix and match. SL has so much to offer but finding exactly what you need is trickier.
Gossip Girl’s Second Life Secret While we’ve been enjoying the stylish fashions and gadgets on Gossip Girl — and the fact that the show is about a blogger! - some fans have started enjoying Gossip Girl’s neighborhood in Second Life experience called “The Upper East Side.”
Pedophile Playground Discovered in ‘Second Life’ Virtual World Every lifestyle group has its own place in the virtual world “Second Life” — including, apparently, pedophiles.
Child prostitution present in Second Life, authorities alarmed The presence of red light activities in Linden Lab’s role-playing virtual world Second Life is already old news, what with the prostitution industry already getting a hold of a piece of virtual Second Life property and offering their carnal services to interested clients. However, much more alarming is the presence of child prostitution in Second Life, and its more than just ogling little girls in playgrounds.
The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Second Life Launch Party A 320 page book about stripping? Apparently there is more to making lindens in Second Life than I imagined, if Daniel Terdiman’s newly released Entrepreneur’s Guide to Second Life: Making Money in the Metaverse is any indication.
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to explore Second Life in Nov. 15 symposium There seems to be daily news on Second Life, the 3-D virtual world created by Linden Lab in San Francisco that now has nearly 10 million users.

IL2007: Cyber Tour of Second Life I did a 15 minute cyber tour of Second Life to a standing room only (SRO) crowd in the exhibit hall. I showed people part of Info International Island and even interacted with a couple of people there. Yes, the tour was live! For some, this was their first look of SL running in real time. (BTW there is no other way of running it, although can see videos — e.g., videos on YouTube by Ohio University and NOAA — and pictures of SL.)
Stephen Fry lurks in Second Life If you’re not sure who Stephen Fry is, can I direct your attention to his blog and his wikipedia page. He’s a quite famous comedic and serious actor, appearing in Blackadder amongst other famous shows, and he’s also famous for his erudition as the host of QI.
Resident Opinion Survey - How would you answer? I’ve been reading about the resident survey that Linden Lab has been randomly sending to Second Life residents via their client.
A Tale of Two Second Live Promotions: The Office Vs. CSI This year at my building’s Halloween party, I took the lazy route - I dressed as my avatar. Which looks just like me. But over my head I put a transparency stuck to a pair of rabbit ears, proclaiming my Second Life name. So I was not JUST my avatar - I was my avatar with the U/I turned on! In any case, one of my neighbors asked what I was. I said, My Second Life Avatar. And she said… (here’s the punch line)… “That thing Dwight was doing on The Office. I thought they just made it up. Neat.”
The post has a nice comparison of everything related to Second Life, how each show portrayed SL users, how they used it, etc, definitely worth a read.

Reconstructing Hadrian’s Wall in Second Life Second Life is an interactive virtual world in which players create alter-egos (’avatars’) and interact with one another in real time. Schome is a project initiated by the Open University that aims to explore the potential of the Second Life program for developing informal learning activities that bridge the worlds of school and home (viz. sch-ome). Part of this project involved the creation of a dedicated island for learning activities in a part of the virtual world that is restricted to younger users - Schome Park in the Teen Grid.
Sheepish Prokofy is still grinding her axe with the ESC, noting how many sims they’ve shut down, and pointing out some numbers that Wayne Porter had discussed here. She mentions “and I don’t know where he even gets 50,000 concurrent as I was watching assiduously” well, that was PEAK concurrency, and I don’t care how many times you hit refresh, it’s going to be hard to come up with the actual numbers that way. Wayne shoots back in this post, ProkofkyNeva: Metrics and Understanding How Agents, Malware, & Shadows Effect Them to let her know his methods are a lot more reliable than the old refresh and if there is one thing Prok shouldn’t debate him on, it’s probably this. And spyware.
