Primitive Island or Virtual Beachhead?

February 14th, 2008 | Category: Places to Visit, Sims Worth Exploring

What happens when a well known, experienced and multi-talented Second Life avatar squares off against a well known real-world security and e-commerce guru whose connections go all the way to film? Something is brewing in SpellCaster next to Primula Rasa, first mentioned here. “Tensions mount as Federated Funds are cutoff. Techno Wizards, Spell Casters, and Magicians collide, cast and spread their fiery magic, armed with the arcane tools, runes, relics and stones thought long forgotten.” Are you ready to choose sides?

Spell Caster

Spell Caster Dark

And it is getting bigger and bigger. From a cryptic notecard…

You have been selected, if you so choose, to participate, as much as you wish, in an epic experiment and you will be asked to make a selection…choosing either the side of science (Prototypers- lead by Timeless Prototype or the Chevalians- lead by Corwin Chevalier)- these are actual avatars who also serve as character archetypes. The experience is ongoing and will span four sims or more during an unknown length of time.

The project is still under beta build status now. At this point you need take no action, but if you choose just let either individual General or their aids of your interest. This is a primarily non-violent simulation, in real-time, using symbols, song, art and immersion to model different ways educators and businesses can utilize 3D worlds. Goals are to study system dynamics, micro transactions and other immersive aspects of 3D media.

The Back Story

The Prototypers and the Chevaliens have traveled to this world (Delphic) to study the evolution of knowledge as it occurs in “less advanced” people capable of developing “functional” intelligence, in an effort to further their own understanding of how the “great civilizations” of the universe came to be.

In essence, they seek to discover clues as to “how” and “why” they have advanced to such a high stage in evolution, while so many others remain nothing more than what some would consider primitives…or animals at best. A ruling was put forth by the Council of the Galactic Consortium of Lemnus in order to end the rivalry that, based on Seldone Entropical Theory, could cause serious unrest and economic upheaval.

This task, upon completion, would determine which of the two schools of thought would be next in line to lead all advanced life of the known metaverse and access to the rare and precious Genetadox vaccine. The Consortium power structure, by law, must change hands once a millennium. These laws were enacted through the passing of the Genetic Longevity Caste Act due to the much longer life spans granted after genome mapping was completed and stem cell mining was legalized leading to the creation of Genetadox.

Also, perhaps, in the process, solve one of the greatest mysteries of all time.

(Pragulus Rex, the prolific philosopher, interjects that as human, we must often wonder and debate as to how we have developed our self proclaimed intellectual superiority over that of other life forms. It might be reasonable to believe that species more advanced than our own, e.g. intellectually, would be even further removed from this knowledge as it pertains to their own species.)

As the two competing power houses via for control of the next 100 years, the Chevaliens and Prototypers are well known for their sometimes greatly opposing viewpoints as to what the true determining aspects of knowledge may be. Not to mention the winning party would gain access to the rare Genetadox vaccine granting that group an abnormally long life span.

Well known for their unsurpassed technological advancements, the Protoypers, archetypical scientists, eagerly hypothesize that it is the advancement of logic and scientific deduction that comprise the true semblance of knowledge. Long have they held to the theory of the Great Algorithm of the Universe, and believe that this research will bring them leaps and bounds closer to writing the final proofs needed to explain it all.

The Chevaliens are believers and crusaders…in every essence of the word. Their faith and mystical approach to the universe has led them to uncover secrets that cannot be imagined or understood by outsiders. It is supposedly drawn from the lore of Earth’s ancient Sumer and a deity named Tiamiat. Tiamiat is a dragon and one of their primary power symbols. In their eyes the mind is more than a collection of neurons and cranial fluid capable of incredible calculation, but perhaps the vessel for things less tangible and supernatural. They believe that while science is worthy a chivalric “moral code” and
spreading of this code is more important above all else. Not even one’s death should stop its replication and some say that the code can be modified to ensure it can survive.

For both, a singularity exists. Every answer often uncovers twice as many questions…whether the means to such answers are those of science or mysticism.

And so, the two parties sought out a primitive place of proper potential- Project Primula Rasa in the far flung Delphic System. Working hand in hand with one another, yet competing all the same…as they via to be the one party who could discover the answers to the origins of knowledge would gain control over the consortium and therefore the funding and political power of the entire metaverse as a whole and longevity.

Small, pink and vaguely simian were their candidates- or so believed. Simple tool users- still living in caves, or huts, spear fishing, and having just discovered the basic secrets of fire…a perfect specimen with which to begin their study over the evolution of knowledge. Yet life on Primula Rasa wasn’t quite that simple…

Corwin and Timeless have promised more on my questions and Corwin said to expect an even more detailed story background on his “typists” personal blog tonight. (Corwin maintains that the existence of a human typist behind his avatar is merely a myth.)

I have been visiting some of the better looking sims and snapping some new pics since I finally have Windlight working correctly, and I would be remiss if I did not get some new pics from Black Swan, which I first visited here.

Privateer Space: Revisited

February 12th, 2008 | Category: Places to Visit, Sims Worth Exploring

I ended up back at Privateer Space again and ended up finding a lot more stuff I didn’t see on the first visit. I think I had the most fun at the Mini Racing track, I thought I had more pictures of the racing than this, must have been having too much fun.

Here is the race track.

Lindens Department of Public Works

February 09th, 2008 | Category: Land Issues, Linden Land, Places to Visit, Public Works

Linden Labs today announced they are creating a Department of Public Works, the LDPW, to create and fix content on Linden Land to improve the experience of all residents who live or visit the mainland. They are going to staff it with 10 builders, scripters and artists who have been referred to them and have time to actually do the work. They did not mention who or how they were referred to start with, but did say that they will look into how they could invite others to apply. They also did not mention if the workers were going to get reimbursed for their work or not.

What will we work on? Good question; basically, we will consider anything and everything that we feel will make the mainland more attractive, fun, engaging and interesting for new or existing residents. Initially, we’re looking at extending the city area which is very popular, so that will involve some new built up areas to the west of Barcola (joined via bridges to preserve existing water views). We’ll also be looking at new park areas, Linden folly builds, beautifying existing Linden land, better gathering places and seeding new mainland with themed builds. Some of the content may find its way into the Library in your inventories.

In addition, there will be other work ongoing as part of this program that will include repairing terrain, and yes - finally completing the missing coastline on the southern continent. Source: The Linden Department of Public Works

I went and visited Barcola for the first time, I’ll admit, I don’t think I’ve been on the mainland to often, at least I haven’t been seeking it out, other than looking at the roads on the map, and whatever sims I’ve visited that are on the mainland. Jack Linden answered some comments in this comment on the blog post and said that they were looking into doing something about the ad farms and they probably won’t be working on the roads yet, as they would prefer to use some form of none prim road and not impose of those residents already living there if they didn’t have to.

This is the area they will start building onto.

Barcola already has a little city park.

Journey Scheduled to Open Virtual World In Second Life

January 31st, 2008 | Category: Music, Places to Visit, Press release

Journey Scheduled to Open Virtual World In Second Life!

On Feb 1st 2008 the rock band Journey will release their new Virtual Island in Second Life. A grand opening party is planned inside Second Life at the “Journey Rock Band” sim and will feature a meet and greet with band members as well as live DJ’s covering much of Journey’s history, and playing recorded studio and live performances as well as lots of other great music for fans to party to! The grand opening party is scheduled to start at 10:00 am on Feb 1st. The Journey island region in Second Life is named “Journey Rock Band”. Learn more at

Journey has long been known for innovations in stage sets so creating a Second Life Island for fans to enjoy was an easy decision. The island features dedicated areas for each album along with audio and video presentations. There are also two venues on the island the Escape Club and the Captured Amphitheater where live SL events can be held.

Journey’s new redesigned website will be re-launched on or around January 29th. It will feature band history, tour information, photos and a new forum.

Journey is currently getting ready to start their 2008 World Tour which begins in Santiago Chile in mid February.

The Journey Island was built by Journey’s long time web developer and features work by SL builders Farrokh Vavoom, Argus Collingwood, Adrian Harbinger and Jocelyn Sands.

Recent Press Release:

Journey–Neal Schon (guitar), Jonathan Cain (keyboards), Ross Valory (bass), Deen Castronovo (drums)–is proud to introduce fans all over the world to their new lead singer, Arnel Pineda (”pin-eh-da”). He replaces Jeff Scott Soto, who parted ways with the band earlier this year after stepping in for Steve Augeri, who had to leave the band in 2006 for medical reasons.

Arnel hails from Quezon City in the Philippines and has been singing Journey songs–in addition to original material–with his band, The Zoo, for the past couple of years in clubs all over his homeland. Joining the legendary band is a dream come true for him.

“It’s so exciting to sing with one of the best bands in the world. It’ll be a lot of hard work on my part and I’m actually looking forward to the scrutiny I’ll get from the hardcore Journey fans. I know they’ll expect me to sound exactly like `the voice` (Steve Perry), but that will never happen. I know there’s only one Steve Perry in this world.”

When it was time for Journey to look for a new lead singer, the internet came to their rescue. Guitarist Neal Schon wanted someone new to the music business, so he turned to YouTube. After finding Arnel singing “Faithfully,” he knew he had found the perfect frontman.

“I was frustrated about not having a singer,” explains guitarist Neal Schon, “so I went on YouTube for a couple of days and just sat on it for hours. I was starting to think I was never going to find anybody. But then I found The Zoo and I watched a bunch of different video clips that they had posted. After watching the videos over and over again, I had to walk away from the computer and let what I heard sink in because it sounded too good to be true. I thought, `he can’t be that good. But he is that good, he’s the real deal and so tremendously talented. Arnel doesn’t sound synthetic and he’s not emulating anyone. I tried to get a hold of him through YouTube and I finally heard from him that night, but it took some convincing to get him to believe that it really was me and not an imposter.”

Arnel Pineda picks up the story: “My friend Noel picked up the message on YouTube and told me it was from Neal. I thought it was a hoax so I ignored it. Noel said, `what if it really was Neal and he wanted to offer you the chance of a lifetime?` So I e-mailed Neal back and the rest is history.”

“Arnel brings a soulful and passionate voice to Journey,” continues keyboardist Jonathan Cain. “His personality is very well-suited to our music. He’s a sincere, authentic person with a great smile and a big heart. I think fans are really going to love him. With Arnel’s soaring tenor, Journey returns to our heritage sound.”

Schon agrees, “We feel reborn. I think there’s a lot of chemistry between the five of us. At first we were going to go into the studio and just write 4 songs, but now it’s escalated to a lot of great new and diverse material. The stuff sounds tremendous. Everyone’s so stoked about it. We feel very fortunate to have found Arnel.”

Journey is currently working on a new album with legendary producer Kevin Shirley, which they hope to release by spring/summer 2008.

The Fish at Primula Rasa

January 29th, 2008 | Category: Artificial Life, Places to Visit, Sims Worth Exploring

Timeless Prototype has created some really interesting fish for Primula Rasa in Second Life, they learn and interact with their environment. This blue fish swam up to me, he bumped me, pushed me around a little, rolled over a bunch of times and was rubbing up against my legs like a cat at the end.

The Fish at Primula Rasa 4

In the writeup on Primula Rasa on eightbar, a fish lifted him out of the water.

The things that initially attracted my attention were the fish that Timeless has created. Not only are they fantasticaly articulated and organic in their swimming motion but whilst we were talking the fish took an interest in us and congregated around the jetty we were on. Timeless says he has seen all sorts of unprogrammed but interesting behaviour as the fish take an interest in their surroundings and each other. He got me to hover in the water and a fish decided to lift me up and ‘rescue me’ clearly not scared of the predator AV :-) Source: Artificial Life - Timeless style

Unfortunately for those fish, you can go spear fishing. NOTE: No actual virtual fish were harmed in the following pictures. ;)

Primula Rasa: Artificial Life in a Virtual World

January 29th, 2008 | Category: Artificial Life, Places to Visit, Sims Worth Exploring

Love it or hate it, spend hours upon hours there or hardly ever come inworld at all, you have to admit one thing, there are some really creative people out there and Timeless Prototype, one of the best, and his team keep getting better all the time. Take for example his latest creation, Primula Rasa, a growing, ever changing environment in Second Life. The most fascinating piece of Primula Rasa is the fish, but I’ll get to those in the next blog post, and this sim is enhanced for windlight.

Primula Rasa Main Entrance

Do you enjoy new realms? Do you like to curate or study organisms or find joy in the science and spirituality behind life? Set your imagination free at Primula Rasa- the Primitive Slate…a build in progress.

The really cool thing about this place is the trees, mushrooms, flowers, etc, are always growing, and restarting in different spots, as the seeds float around the island according to the weather.

The positioning and seeding is all in the hands of the weather and of the random flow of seeds that you see fluttering around the place. Source: Artificial Life - Timeless style

The random nature of it I’m sure will make for some interesting looking plants in the future, such as this tree/mushroom.

What have we here?

Primula Rasa altar

Some form of torture device, or a spot for sacrifices?

Primula Rasa sacrificing Stone

As I sit and think about this particular spot on this primitive but growing island, I can’t help but wonder what its purpose is. The build is still growing, but if I can get an interview with Timeless so I can ask him, I sure will.

Timeless Underground

Timeless Underground

This place is one of the best clubs I have been too in Second Life. Timeless Underground is one of those places you just don’t know who is going to show and when. Lots of old timers like this place, as well as several Lindens that I have seen, and if you can get Phillip there, what can’t you do?

Urban Underground Unloosed

January 24th, 2008 | Category: Aribella Lafleur, Places to Visit, Shopping

Urban Underground Unloosed by Aribella Lafleur

With all my haute couture lost to the desert winds and my fashionably-challenged Sherpa crew looking like dishevelled vagrants, it was high time for a shopping expedition. To my shame, I was forced to don an outfit that had been (gasp!) worn once before. My enthusiastic attendants displayed their excitement for intensive retail therapy with loud groans, accompanied by the occasional moan and sullen expression.

Amid much dragging of heels we headed to a questionable store proposed by one of my team and warily descended to its suspicious underground location. Upon entering the warehouse nothing seemed amiss. However, while browsing through the clothing I suddenly felt the prickling sensation of being observed by an unseen eye, or several. I looked around for hidden surveillance cameras or IRS agents, but could not spy the cause of my unease…

Big Bro is Watching

Shrugging off my apprehension, I rejoined my band of bored bargain hunters.

With our usual luck, we found ourselves strolling directly into a thrashing throng of outstretched limbs connected to the drooling, fang-filled oral cavities of a beast which had obviously never heard of dental hygiene. Whilst writhing in the grip of the malformed organism (frightfully close to its rank, decaying incisors), I noticed the slivers of bone and flesh caught between its teeth. Immediately, I unlaced my boot and began using the cord to floss the detritus from the monster’s closest maw. Giving a sigh of obvious relief, it dropped my crew and leaned towards my ministrations. Choking back bile, I continued, cleaning a total of five rancid orifices of their accumulated debris.

Oops we got et

After a stern lecture on oral care (to which the creature paid surprisingly rapt attention), we attempted to leave before the animal was reminded of his ravenous appetite. Our escape was foiled when he instead wished to share this new-found knowledge with his fellow mutants. As soon as he called out to the horde, we were rapidly surrounded by great numbers of eager misshapen entities.

The desire for shopping had been roundly quashed by the thoroughly unsettling experience with the monsters. We nervously feigned jovial faces as they took commemorative photos, then we made hasty excuses and fled without making any purchases, followed by echoes of pitiful pleadings for our return.

Second Life Statue of Liberties

January 22nd, 2008 | Category: Places to Visit

Was browsing through the new sim list and noticed one called the Statue of Liberty, so I thought I would pop in, take a few pics and head on out. But, after a quick search there was already a Statue of Liberty in Second Life, this one created in 2005.

The newest one certainly looks more realistic and like the real life one, while the other has more of a Second Life Art look to it? Which one do you like best?

Here is the one from 2005 by Liberty Tesla.

The Mystery Around Monolith 8

January 18th, 2008 | Category: Places to Visit, Sims Worth Exploring

Looking for something to do in Second Life? Looking for a little mystery? How about checking into the ongoing thematic riddle at Fastlane revolving around the Monument of Time and Monolith 8.

Monolith 8

Close up

From a notecard:

This is a brief notice to let members know of a new and ongoing “exercise” currently located on currently being constructed “fastlane” island.

Mythically- “The Monument of Time is a place where the magic of art, technological sorcery and old school wizards blaze up to meet in secret and trade spell craft, knowledge, power, build alliances and puzzle out what the timeless monolith is spelling out. The actual lore behind this exercise was the construction of seven (7) black granite textured monoliths by a long-time resident years ago- not all have been found. Some are “lost”.

Recently a “Monolith 8″ surfaced at the top of seven scripted steps. This piece was acquired by the head of this group though terms undisclosed for the exercise.

As per the charter there are no “right answers”, it is more important to ask the right questions about our virtual worlds and engage in conversation. Participants will find many recurrent mathematical symbols, historical symbols and formulas in the build. In addition obvious themes could time, virtual age, genetics, memetics, scarcity, authenticity, value, and aesthetics- even economics.

Members are welcome to study the build, interact with items from inside Second Life or other media to see what type of questions these recurrent themes and symbols stimulate- if any. The build is not static and will change over time.

All are welcome.

Play close attention to dates, scripts, effects, Second Life history, art, search results and other mediums that might produce thought or a different view of the virtual. Members are welcome to create, within good “prim limits” visual interpretations (submit to members with title Historian) or Officers, or post on their land. In addition comments via blogs, twitter, BlogHud, SlTweets, or writing about what questions or thoughts you have on any “social media”. At times disabling spatial music may allow you to hear other sounds.

Page Preview

Below some factoids about “8″ will be forthcoming to help stimulate thought.

Thank you for your time (and use of a precious group- since we only have 25). You are also welcome to walk around the rest of the island as it is being constructed.

Best regards,
Corwin Chevalier

ON 8 …….

I removed the facts on 8 at from the end of the notecard. But, as Corwin said in the notecard, look everywhere for information, there are even some in the description of some objects. There is also stuff hidden everywhere, even in plain site.
