Gronstedt Group “Train for Success”

September 07th, 2007 | Category: Education, Employment, Jobs, Second Life Voice

What: Gronstedt Group “Train for Success”

When: Thu Sep 13 12pm - Thu Sep 13 1pm

Where: Wolpertinger

Description: Web 2.0 Powered Communications: Transforming frontline performance with Second Life, pod casting and simulations

Thursdays 9.00-10.00 AM SLT (noon-1.00 PM EDT).

A completely new breed of game-savvy and socially-networked employees is entering the workforce, with little patience for the traditional doldrums of workplace communications. They want to be engaged, in control, and part of the storyline. Learn how leading companies like IBM, Ericsson, Dell, Nike and EMC are turbo-charging workplace performance with learning programs that focus on doing, simulating, socializing, playing, sharing, and collaborating.

- Redefine and energize meetings with the sprawling, vibrant 3D virtual worlds of Second Life.

- Turn the morning commute into a learning experience with fast-paced, radio-style Podcast audio feeds.

- Help people learn by doing with game-based simulators.

The session is led by Dr. Anders Gronstedt, president of the Gronstedt Group and author of recent Harvard Business Review and T+D Magazine articles on the topic.

We’ll be Second Life voice. You need to turn voice on by going to Edit > Preferences > Voice Chat and check the “Enable Voice” box. To turn your voice microphone on, press the “Talk” button on the Voice tab in the right bottom corner of the Viewer.

Doing Business And Using Voice

August 20th, 2007 | Category: Business, Discussion, Second Life Voice

What: Upcoming Second Life Discussions: Doing Business And Using Voice.

When: 8 am Second Life Time (PDT) Tuesday, Aug. 21

Where: Amphitheater at Dr. Dobb’s Island

Monello will discuss some best practice for doing real-life business and marketing in Second Life.

Look for that 8 am Second Life Time (PDT) Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the Amphitheater at Dr. Dobb’s Island.. This is sort of a follow-up to the last session, where had the creators of another RL-to-SL business, Infinite Vision Media, which created the Weather Channel’s area.

Then, a week later, we’ll hear from Jeska Dzwigalski, director of community for Linden Lab, creators and operators of Second Life. Jeska, who’s called Jeska Linden in SL, will give us an update on the new voice capabilities.

That session will be 8 am SLT/PDT, also at the amphitheater.

And we plan to hold both sessions using the voice client, with the usual plan: If voice starts acting wonky, we’ll just switch to text chat and carry on. Source: Upcoming Second Life Discussions: Doing Business And Using Voice

Second Life Voice Viewer

August 03rd, 2007 | Category: Second Life Clients, Second Life Voice

Second Life released the voice viewer tonight, and if the comments on their blog are indicative of how most people feel, then I think most may unhappy the Lindens are adding features and not fixing some of the problems that need fixing. Many reported having troubles, one said he could no longer get back on SL, it crashed at startup every time, others talked of it reducing performance even more since the grid has been having trouble of late anyway, and many, many people were complaining about the unified communications window, a combination of the IM window and the chat window, which sounds like it could get tricky, I figure we’ve all typed a message into the wrong window a time or two. I haven’t downloaded the client myself, I’m going to wait a bit and see if it works for most people or not.

New Features:

  • In-World Voice Chat

  • In-world Voice Chat is now part of the main viewer.
  • You can see and manage all voice settings in Edit > Preferences > Voice Chat.
  • Voice is off by default. To enable (and disable) voice, visit Edit > Preferences > Voice Chat and check/uncheck the box beside “Enable voice chat”.
  • A voice set-up wizard appears during first voice use to help residents set up voice and adjust their mic volume and tuning. You should run the voice set-up wizard even if you only want the ability to hear others and do not wish to speak.
  • Push-to-Talk is part of the Voice feature. Push-to-Talk is ON by default, which means Resident mics are OFF by default.
  • Speech gestures for voice are included in the Library, in Gestures > Speech Gestures. These gestures need to be activated in order to work; they are off by default.
  • Streaming video support for Linux client.

Changes:

  • Shortcut keys for menu items in the Client & Server menus are now disabled if the menus are hidden.

  • Text from objects can be muted.
