All About the Pie Menu

October 12th, 2007 | Category: Second Life Tips, Second Life Videos

Torley Linden has posted another tip and video, this one is all about the pie menu. He gives the basic refresher course, introduces you to the new group invite slice on the menu, changing the pie menu’s appearance, inspecting object details and how to change the appearance of the pie menu.

HOW TO CUSTOMIZE (aka “PIMP OUT”) YOUR PIE MENU

In Second Life, press Ctrl-Alt-D on PC (some systems may need Ctrl-Alt-Shift-D) or Opt-Ctrl-D on Mac to enable Client menu. It’ll appear at the top of the screen next to the Help menu.

Go to Client menu > Debug Settings.

In the top text box, type in “PieMenuBgColor” (it’ll auto complete”, and press Enter. Click the downward-pointing triangle arrow next to that text box and you’ll notice 4 related choices: PieMenuBgColor, PieMenuLineColor, PieMenuLineWidth, and PieMenuSelectedColor. Metanomics: Business and Policy in the Metaverse

September 13th, 2007 | Category: Education, Second Life Videos

I first read about Metanomics: Business and Policy in the Metaverse on Techcrunch, which is calling it a conference, but no where on the Metanomics site does it mention a conference, it appears to be a series of planned events that will include speakers from game developers; executives managing real-world and virtual-world businesses; regulators and politicians; and scholars of business, economics, law and sociology. Metanomics is being created by Metaverse and Cornell University. From Techcrunch’s questions with Nick Wilson.

Wilson says that Metanomics is about bridging the gap between those comfortable in Second Life, and those wary of it:

One of the things that I want to do, is use video, podcasts, web to bring this stuff to people in formats they’re more comfortable with. To bridge the gap between those who’re comfortable in SL and those not yet there. Hence partnerships with SLCN.tv for all of these shows and the team up with Cornell. Source: Second Life 2.0: The Metanomics Conference

This first event is Metanomics 101 By Robert Bloomfield, it starts on 09/17/2007 at 11:00
and ends 09/17/2007 at 12:00 Time zone: US/Pacific. Metanomics 101 is the kickoff event of the Metanomics Series. The session will lay out some of the key issues facing those who study business and policy in the metaverse, and preview some of the speakers and topics that will be presented over the coming months. Be sure to join us live on Metaversed Island, or watch the live broadcast on SLCN.tv.

They are planning on having an event most weeks of the traditional academic year (September-May), to be scheduled on Mondays, 2pm-3pm EST (11am-2pm PDT). The complete schedule is on the calendar on the right side of the screen of the <a href=”http://metanomics.metaversed.com/Metanomics website. Below is a two minute video that will give you a quick overview.

HBO Purchases Television Rights to “My Second Life”

September 04th, 2007 | Category: RL Meets SL, Second Life Videos

In what will be a win/win for everyone involved in Second Life, HBO has bought the television rights for My Second Life, a machinima documentary about Molotov Alva, avatar of Douglas Gayeton, an accomplished multimedia director, and they will promote it as an Oscar nominee contender. They will screen it in a Los Angeles theater to meet the Academy’s qualifications and are hoping to premiere it at Sundance, a film festival in the United States that ranks alongside the Cannes, Venice, Berlin and Toronto film festivals for importance.

This is the rare Second Life news that is worthy of full superlatives: it’s the highest profile example of an SL-to-RL rights deal so far, leveraging Linden Lab’s policy in which Residents retain the underlying intellectual property rights to content they create in-world. (It far eclipses Tringo’s SL-to-Nintendo Gameboy deal of a couple years ago.) It’s the first SL machinima to sell to a major TV broadcaster. (Longtime SL auteur Pierce Portocarrero recently landed a well-deserved development deal with NBC on the strength of his Second Life machinima like this one, but to my knowledge, the network didn’t purchase the broadcast rights to Pierce’s existing works.) It’s also the first time SL-based content has landed someone a Hollywood agent, for in the acquisition process, Gayeton secured representation with UTA, among the industry’s “big five” firms, which also counts Johnny Depp, Harrison Ford, and the Coen Brothers as clients. I suspect some non-Second Life superlatives are in order too, though I’m less sure here: it’s probably the biggest Hollywood purchase of a video which first aired on YouTube, and the most prominent distribution deal for a machinima project made in any 3D platform. The author of the New World Notes blog, Wagner James Au, was partly responsible for this series airing on Youtube, as a staffer for Submarine uploaded the first episode to Youtube, upon which Wagner blogged about it on his site. That hit Boing Boing and the rest, as they say is history.

I have posted the first video of My Second Life below.

Check out this video from Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte, Claudia Leitte in Second Life in her Video, this shows Claudia Leitte going into Second Life in her Video to find the man she is attracted too. Interesting as this does tend to happen in some couple situations, whether they meet in real life and go into second life or vice versa.
